Reviews and News:By RC Clark

I just received a cd today from an old high school friend, Chris Blood, of the 80’s drummer fame in this small town. Chris is now part of an original band up in Boston,MA. The band is known as Catanine. For those of you cruising the web, their internet web site address is the following: http://www.catanine.com. After listening to the Cd a couple of times, to get the best taste of the music, here’s what came to mind: hard, heavy, and current.

Chris doesn’t miss a beat, the guitars lock in rhythm; nothing left missing. The vocalist carries you through each song effortlessly. My favorite picks are Worlds Fall Down and Shadows. I went to web site, I recommend you check out the pictures of Chris and the band. Chris said the cd would be available from the web site soon and plans to do a couple of local shows possibly in December. Well Chris, we will be eagerly waiting to hear Catanine perform. ****

In the animal kingdom, only the strongest and most adaptable species survive. In science and technology only the most innovative, hi-tech cutting-edge ideas succeed. In the music business, anyone can win with a little luck, money, and connections. For the rest of us in the musician world, it’s about hard work, perseverance, musical creativity, the proper promotion, utter self sacrifice, unparalleled representation, and long shot odds that rival the lottery.

It seems the music industry is content with saying " oh yeah, another band, so what." Well, we say "this metal band from Boston is worth going the distance for." Formed in early 1999, the group has its roots buried deep in the New England music scene. "From the cover bands to the original bands, our hearts have always been into the music, " remarks Ed, guitarist for Catanine. " We’re not your average spring chicken."

The road Catanine is about to embark on is, to say the least, a challenge. The band wants what every band wants: a record deal with national exposure. Does the band have what it takes? Of course they do. Catanine can compete on an international level given the proper promotion. All the band needs is a little luck, some investment capital, and the appropriate connections. History speaks for itself. Both Chris and Ed have been playing together since 1992. Before Catanine, Kjell had been busy with numerous local projects and Evan had been busy with a project (Arkaina, out of Methuen, MA) that was negotiating European distribution on Nordic Metal Blade records. When the four members finally came together in 1999, everyone knew it was the right thing. "It was like the light at the end of a long tunnel," says Chris, drummer for Catanine. "Ed and I had been searching for the right mix that would complete the music and we got more than we bargained for."

In the studio, Catanine seems natural. Laying the basic tracks goes down like clockwork. " We try to maximize our time when laying tracks so we can devote our efforts to the mix later, " explains Kjell, vocalist for Catanine. " The mix is what makes or breaks a band. Weight and content pack the mix, not volume. Everything has its place, adds Evan, bassist for Catanine." Chris states that "we approach the studio recording sessions as if we were performing live.

We want to capture the intensity of a live show and translate that to tape and at mix. I live for the mix. Someone has to be there. Most bands on a local level don’t have the money or time to spend at mix down. We are very critical of our mixes. We want the highest quality product available to us at our price point."

"I guess that’s why we’re always out of money," remarks Kjell.

Catanine’s approach to writing material is a familiar one to most bands. Ed usually writes the main riffs, Chris and Evan will help arrange and write their own parts, and Kjell will complete the equation with lyrics that border real life imagery and paint pictures of our lives. " I feed off the energy of the music and the lyrics will usually be inspired by my life events and the intensity of the band, " Kjell explains. "We test new material out live, a sort of a trial and error before we commit to tape. The crowd and our closest critics define the path of our new songs. So far, we are batting 1,000." Ed goes on to say "we feed off the crowd’s response, we know within seconds if a tune is going to fly or not."

Evan points out, "unlike some bands, even nationally signed bands, we are staying true to our guts: pure hard–edged metal with a late 90’s twist. We continue to evolve and adapt our music with what’s current and selling though. We don’t want to put ourselves out of the market." Chris says, "It is hard to lose focus on your own writing style when the music industry is being shaped and molded to go in a certain direction. You want to follow and be part of the whole movement, but your music starts to suffer because it’s not written from the heart."

Catanine operates their Internet website at http://www.catanine.com. The band promotes and markets their CD’s, T-shirts, and stickers online. Fans can inquire where Catanine is currently playing, keep up to date with the latest band information, view pictures, read member biographies, check out their favorite links, and download versions of their music. The website includes just about every facet of Catanine’s existence. You will find links to their Mp3 Internet sites as well. Once at the Mp3 sites, you can download cd quality versions of selected Catanine music and read listener comments. Mike Hagen Multimedia Creations located in Nashua, NH constructed all the Catanine websites. Mike personally maintains each site on a weekly basis. Anyone can reach him via Catanine’s website.

A respected brotherhood among members and the goal for musical happiness will nourish Catanine into the new Millennium. Their journey is about to begin. The band agrees, "even if we were never recognized and never offered a great deal, we’d still be playing and writing for the pure enjoyment of it." Ed goes on to say, "someday our time will come and we’ll be ready for it."
